Business & Innovation - 2012-04-29 - Generating a new name for Language Learning Tool

The Language Learning Tool needs a new name. I have been thinking that there are several ways to generate a new name.

These are some of the ways that a new name can be created:
1. Analysing the competitor's name, to identify where their name comes from and if there are any strategies that they apply for their naming systems.
2. Personal brainstorm of new names based on own experience
3. Group brainstorm of new names
4. Marketing surveys to encourage target audience ideation of suitable names and vote on popularity.

Once a new 'name' can be found, that is unique and does not already exist as a registered name, then the group can move on to creating a 'brand', and then create and produce the 'marketing materials' for this name and brand.

1. Analysising Competitor names:
----------------------------------

Let's Learn Mandarin
(Let's (action/encouragment) Learn + Language)

BBC Online Chinese
(BBC + Online + Language)

ChinaGram
(Country + Gram to indicate a drawing, record, or diagram)
ie.Telegram, Tangram, etc.

ChinesePod.com
(Language + Podcast sound recording abbreviation)

Mandarin Madness

Man Man Lai
(Chinese for Do it Slowly)

Mindsnacks
(Mind/thinking + food/snack) - Food for thought

Nciku
(N+CI+KU / N+CIKU)
nciku comes from our Chinese name “n词酷”, pronounced ncíkù (’εn’tsɪku / en-suh-koo). “n” stands for “next”, while “词” means “word” and “酷” means “cool”. cíkù is also the sound of “词库”, which means “warehouse full of words”. (Next word is cool / Next warehouse full of words)

Pinyin Trainer
(Romanised writing + application as the trainer) (Subject + Object)

Pleco
(Catfish)

Rosetta Stone
(Key to deciphering another language)

Skritter
(New word based on the idea of a Critter creature writing)

Business & Innovation - 2012-04-29 - Meeting of Meridian Society / SACU - Calligraphy and Opera Demonstration

Today, I made a visit to see a calligraphy demonstration Kam Sang Law on behalf of the Meridian Society at the National Union of Journalists. He showed five styles ways of writing the character Dragon, (as 2012 is the 'Dragon' Year.) - Seal script, Regular, Cursive, Steady, Running, Cursive-Running styles.

I contacted Mr Kam Law, through the Meridian society with the interest of receiving a quote to write calligraphic characters as either regular or running form for the Language Learning tool. The opportunity to commission work supports the ideas of authority and uniqueness (real practice), authenticity and understanding (native writer and artist), and personal (in the sense of meeting with the artist) to present within the Language Learning Tool. He is a well respected calligrapher who has been practising for 27 years and is originally from Hong Kong, now based in London.

It was particularly interesting to note that the characters were written on a long scroll of fine absorbent rice paper. Written vertically from the top, moving the paper up for each new character form. The brush was mostly held vertically.

On the table there were grey circular stone disc paperweights with the emblem of a standing 'horse' stamped into them.

Next to this there is a large brush designed to be able load sufficient ink to create long running strokes, with a finer pointed tip to execute finishing points.

The brush is on a classic 'Shan' mountain-shaped brush holder, a loading and mixing dish containing a a pool of ink, next to a cup of water, bottle of indian ink, and other brushes stored in a box.

The paper absorbed the ink very quickly.

There was a conversation between the members of the society on the dragon form, and whether this also appeared as a radical in other characters.

Hidden below some of the papers was an ink-filled bamboo mat. This was a similar mat to those used for rolling sushi, and presumably used as a rolling container for the brushes after painting.

The video here shows the brush movements.

Specifically we looked at technologies and possible frameworks.

With Elkin we put together a draft presentation outline.

Hi Maria,

Please could you create 6 slides in photoshop for the presentation. See attached draft presentation which gives you an idea of how the sequence will appear.

Please re-arrange these and resize as needed. Place these on a white background.
Save as market-distribution-channels.jpg

Today Elkin, Maria and myself met in Brixton to discuss the Language Learning Tool.

We talked about the concept, the business plan, how elements of the plan can be added into the presentation, and how to demo a prototype, and create demo for screen.

Within the presentation we will aim to incorporate these elements:
- Show a prototype
- Feasibility study
- Investment/Funding Proposal
- Customer identification
- Innovation
- Marketing strategy
- Business planning with examples, and conclusions

Slides:
1.Introduction
2.Look at competitors
3.Timeline
4.
5.
6.Funding sources
7.Partners
8.Conclusion

I put together some quick ideas for a prototype based on the idea of learning radicals:

Often doing work that they did not want to do.

Talked to incubator - genesis, nurture small businesses in exchange for equity.

Consulted management consultants, large business plan.

Dot com crash in 1997 - work dissapearing, clients were pulling in budgets.

Investors, folded up cheque books in 2001, combined with dot com crash created a big problem with Soda.

In 2007, had to make employees reduntant, scale down, leaner process.

Bought assets and restarted. Remove debts. Restarted soda but made alot of similar mistakes.

Lacked business focus, profitable business plan. Still trying to fund own projects.

Better if you do not have big overheads.

Managed to last until 2009, and then same things happened again. Directors has illnesses.

Need to be resilient, things can turn from difficult to unworkable.

Started a new version of Soda. Now taken on an administrator. Expert in Learning games.

Model of pulling in freelancers for projects, keeping overheads to a minimum.

Contract can be substantial, last for 6 months, but does not start for some reason, organisation issue. People not paying.
